You Should See the Other Guy
We had an...encounter...yesterday. We had picked the girls up from a lovely weekend with their Aunt Kelly and were headed back on Highway 71. The girls were hungry, so we were slowing in the right hand lane to turn into a Sonic when we got thwacked by an 18 Wheeler. Actually, if you want to see the other guy, the truck is in the background of this picture:
He was too close, moving to the middle lane, not looking, and smacked us at a fairly high velocity. The car spun, but luckily didn't hit anything else or flip. We all are banged and sore, but it seems like no serious injuries - the girls or us. The one fatality (besides our faithful van), was the rented $2,000 road bike, now in four pieces.
We were heading to return it. While a sad loss (the bike-enthusiast police officer seemed very upset about the broken bike), having the bike in the back kept the girls from sitting in the far back, likely avoiding a far worse outcome. We salute you, Sienna. And you too, rented bike. I thought about putting the bike back together with duct tape and returning it to Bicycle Sport Shop, but I'm guessing they would eventually notice that.
The truck driver was enormously apologetic, and admitted his fault. Sonic gave us free food, though I can think of much easier ways to get tater tots. (Thank you Sonic!) Grey Vannie was towed to its final destination. Gordon came and got us and brought us home. Thank you Gordon!
The "insult to injury" part was that the truck was hauling sod. Not only is all of my grass dead from the drought, now I am getting hit by someone else's green yard.
We are OK. Looking for suggestions for our next car, but OK. The girls didn't seem that phased by the accident, though they may not have the context of how bad it could have been. Abby's hand-held DSI survived the accident, in case you were worried. She was.
I feel like I used to from my boxing days after a long, hard bout. If I'd ever done that.

Aunt Kelly is sooooo grateful you are all okay!!!! I had a hard time falling asleep last night thinking about all that could have been. Our family has had too many narrow escapes this year! I can relate to the biker cop. I had a bike fall off the back of my car on the freeway and hurt several cars once and the cop was kind enough to remind me that not only could my insurance pay for the damage to the car victims of my stray bike, but if I had homeowners or renters insurance (and I did) it would pay for a new bike! My bike was old and I had replacement value coverage, so I got a brand new bike out of the deal :)
Back to reality, I am still shaken and can't express my joy that you and your precious family are not seriously injured! love you all!!!!
