A little over a decade ago I wrote several personal essays about being a part-time single father to Kaileigh, now 15. They were short musings on our lives and our relationship. I entitled them "Corner Pieces," a reference to the attempt to solve a jigsaw puzzle by trying to build the edges and corners first.
Almost exactly a decade after Kaileigh came Abigail & Alexis, now 5. All three girls are the light of my life. And all three are different. With Abby and Alexis, the delight and learning are double. And this time I get to share all of this with my wife Jill.
I realized that it had been nearly ten years since I wrote about my experiences being a dad. And I think it dawned on me how funny and insane and absurd parenthood still is when Alexis stood outside my bedroom door at 6:19 AM on a Saturday, with Jill and I and Abby and even our cat George cowering in our bed, and wronged by some unknown but very grave injustice, screamed, "EVERYBODY IN THIS HOUSE IS STUPID!!! EXCEPT ME!"
With the advent of technology, I pledge to get back into chronicling the funny, the insane, and the absurd. And posting cute pictures of the girls.
To start, an exchange from long ago:
"Kaileigh, you look groggy." (Dad said to tired looking child in car seat)
"Can I see Groggy?"
"No, Kaileigh, 'groggy' is a word that means tired. Are you tired?"
"Where is Groggy?"
"Sweetheart, daddy was asking if you are tired."
"Is Groggy in the water?"
"Yes, Kaileigh, Groggy's in the water."
