The Essence of Unitarianism

We are occasional Unitarians. Meaning we go sporadically to Sunday services. Being Unitarians, that's a valid choice. They support your attendance or non-attendance, as well as the intellectual exploration of the philosophical implications of the ramifications of attendance.

So last fall, on a Sunday that followed a few weeks of sleeping in (and to be quite honest, Sunday morning Wii), we arrive at church and stumble into the first day of a new curriculum in the Sunday School. It's entitled "Our Whole Lives" and ended up being forty three weeks of sexuality discussions with seven and eight-year-olds. It was age appropriate, but did include frank discussions among the parents. After years of Jill talking frankly with the girls, I'm (almost) used to the girls using the words "vagina" and "penis." But I really really don't want to hear about Don's (not his real name) first experience with masturbation or how Sarah (not her real name) encourages her daughter to be naked around the house. Perhaps I'm a prude, but eeww!!!!

Having grown up as a reform Jew, I believe that I had a very progressive upbringing. My parents were liberals (only half of them are now), and we were very progressive. But I can say with complete confidence that in the Smith household, not to mention at Temple Beth Israel, no-one ever uttered the word "vagina."
