I think I am fully becoming a "cyclist." I have been riding on roads large and small, and have had a few "incidents" with cars. No one has hit me, but some people are nicer to cyclists then others. More precisely, most people give bikes a wide berth, but some don't. And others seem to want to antagonize cyclists. I'm not sure what makes them so annoyed that I am out there.
I see a general trend. Whenever I have someone whip right past me, it generally is a young white guy in a truck. Not all young white guys in trucks, but some percentage of them. Once, during a road ride with hundreds of other cyclist, a YWGIT swerved as if to force us off the road.
Again, this is occasional, but even a few times is a few times too many.
I was riding on Sunday on a lovely, large, largely deserted city road. All of the sudden, a car races past me and the passenger yells "Fuck you, Asshole!" It was two young white guys. To be fair, they were in a Honda Civic.
About a quarter mile ahead of me, the light turned red and they stopped. I realized I could probably catch them, so I started hauling ass to the light. I got a hundred yards away when the question popped in my head "what will you do when you catch them?"
I had some sports beans I could have thrown at them. I could respond, "Yah, well fuck you too!" I could blow them a kiss. None of these seemed like they would produce a socially desired response.
Just as I was running through all of the bad possibilities, the light turned green and they peeled away. Lucky for them. I had just thought of my response.
"Too broke for a pickup truck, asshole?"
