I am a data guy. I like tracking and analyzing data. I've even found it to be the thing that helps me change habits. Cycling stuck partly because I could track distance, speed, calories, and routes. Now I have two and a half years of data and can analyze trends, and make projections.
Look for my upcoming research paper "Way too much data about my cycling," a meta-analysis (chi-squared ratio of 3.7 and confidence interval of 0.05) in the Journal "Russell.*"
Since it worked so well to get the cycling habit to stick, I am now tracking other things in order to help me change habits. For instance, my spreadsheet "Screaming at employees" tracks the number, intensity and duration of times I scream at one of my staff members. And the spreadsheet "Sarcastic responses to reasonable questions" helps me recognize all of the places where a sarcastic response could have been employed that were wasted with actual answers.
Looking back through all of my cycling data, I calculate that I have burned 492,671 calories (plus or minus 12) since January 2013 (when I started tracking) through riding my bike. The inter-web tells me that 3,500 calories burned equals a pound. So, I have lost 140.8 pounds cycling. I should be somewhere in the 70-80 pound range. I haven't been on a scale lately, so I can't say for sure, but I think I might still be more than that.
Perhaps I need to increase my confidence interval.
